The Faceless Lady

A few months ago I had a client come in for one of my original designs. I actually drew it a few years ago and it was one in a short series in which I drew retro pin up girls with a supernatural twist.

When she came in, I showed her the design to double check it was the correct one and she said, “Ah yes, the faceless lady.” The name interested me so I asked her about how it came to be. She told me, “Well it’s funny, as soon as you turn 40 everyone stops looking at you. But you try your best to look nice anyway. You do all your make up and wear nice clothes but you might as well be invisible.” I never expected that she would feel like the woman in the drawing.

It wasn’t what I intended when I originally drew the image, but I’m glad it spoke to someone. It was an incredible, if not a slightly saddening, insight into what it’s like to be a woman.
