Social Media
A couple of weeks ago I deleted Instagram and Facebook off of my phone. The decision came from a few things: I realised how much time I was spending looking at the screen absorbing useless information, I found that I was creating art purely to post on social media, and my mental health would take a hit whenever I posted something and it didn’t get enough likes. It all felt pretty disgusting. Needless to say I’ve felt much better for it. I’m not constantly checking my phone, I’m reading more, and I’m once again creating things because I want to instead of trying to get people to see it.
I asked myself why I’ve waited this long and the answer seemed obvious. I’ve often said that if it wasn’t for work I wouldn’t have an Instagram or Facebook, because it helps bring new customers in. I think this is a lie I told myself so I wouldn’t need to give up this social media addiction. I think these big companies want to have you believe that you can’t be successful without a massive online following. I now endeavour to prove them wrong.
If I don’t, I have a feeling I’ll be happier all the same.
